BACKGROUND
DANCE CREW was started in 1993 by Amy Gould and senior dancers of the School.
Their objectives were and are:
To create original chorographic works of our time and place in society;
To take ballet to communities that have very little knowledge of the art;
To create new audiences;
To encourage, support and train the youth from the rural communities and;
By so doing to
generate work for themselves and the allied art forms.
PAST ACTIVITIES
Dance Crew has developed a vast body of original work choreographed by Amy Gould. These works have been performed in our theatre and all over the Western and Eastern Cape.
These contacts and assistance programs have been maintained.
Teachers trained in the school and company are currently teaching in Piketberg, Saron, Tulbagh, Athlone, Retreat, Heathfield and Grassy Park as well as in the main school in Tokai.
A limited number of bursaries for those in need who have talent and a strong work ethic have been established.
2006 artists of all descriptions sat in on Dance Crew classes and rehearsals over 3 months. The artists held an exhibition of the work produced and sold work to the value of R20,000
2007 we started a ‘Learning Through Dance’ program in the Eastern Cape working with school teachers and people from various community outreach programs.
2009 Dance Crew created an online Arts & Culture Magazine to give practitioners in the field a voice and for those interested to use the magazine to promote and market their work.
CURRENT ACTIVITES
2010 Dance Crew together with selected dancers from the Amy Gould Ballet School will be performing at their Theatre On-Main
Original music and choreography has been commissioned for, The Girl with the Enamel Eyes
DVDs and Cds of this production will be for sale at the venue during the performances in November to December and by email.
